Wave 3, Writer Shake-ups, and a Female Nightwing?

Hello boys and girls (the former much more than the latter I assume); welcome to another edition of Super Serial. If you want to know the bullet points of comic book news for this week, then look no further than this very page!

It's that time again for solicitations! For September to be precise, and DC sure has a surprise in store for everyone, prequel books! Yeah...prequel books...read ahead for more!

  • All of The New 52 for the month of September will be #0 issues, highlighting stories taking place just before the #1 issues. They will show new origin stories, fill in continuity gaps, and tie the world together for the upcoming year. The perfect jumping on point!
  • Many of the issues also feature guest writers, such as Greg Hurwitz on Detective Comics and Judd Winick returning to Green Arrow!
  • In addition to that, Wave 3 of the New 52 is set to begin that very month! 4 brand new on-goings are set to replace the recently cancelled books Voodoo, Captain Atom, Resurrection Man, and Justice League International. The new books are:
    • Talon (James Tynion IV, Guillem March): Spinning out of Batman's Court of the Owls story-line, this series details the adventures of Calvin Rose, the only Talon to ever escape the brainwashing of the Court of Owls!
    • The Phantom Stranger (Dan DiDio, Brent Anderson & Scott Hanna): Spinning out of FCBD's The New 52 #1, this series tells the tale of the Phantom Stranger and his important connection to the Circle of Eternity and Pandora!
    • Sword of Sorcery (Christy Marx, Aaron Lopresti & Matt Ryan): Teenager Amy Winston discovers she is Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld; and she's being hunted! Includes a back-up story (Tony Bedard, Jesus Saiz) featuring a post-apocalyptic re-telling of Beowulf and Grendel.
    • Team 7 (Justin Jordan, Jesus Merino): Spinning out of sub-plots trickled through-out the DCU comes Team 7, a series set five years in the past; chronicling the missions of a military team created to investigate and take down these new, so-called, "super-heroes". Featuring Amanda Waller, Steve Trevor, John Lynch, Alex Fairchild, Grifter, Black Canary, and Deathstroke!
  • Zero Month (as I like to call it) also brings with it one creative team shake-up, that of Scott Lobdell and Kenneth Rockafort taking over for Giffen and Jurgens on Superman.
  • In the Vertigo world, many new series continue to chug along while one simply couldn't find a foot-hold. Dominique Laveau: Voodoo Child ends in September with issue #7.
  • And finally, a single image has been revealed for an upcoming issue of Smallville: Season 11 that eludes to a future story-line. In it, not only do we get the Smallville Universe's first appearance of Batman, but also the fan favorite Stephanie Brown in the role of Nightwing! She's been a Robin and a Batgirl (as well as Spoiler) but this is her first time under this particular cowl. Color me excited!

  • As for Marvel, the 50th Anniversary of Spider-Man continues to build and build! We've had the monumental story-line "Ends of the Earth", the universe-shattering mini-series "Spider-Men" and now Marvel has teased a single-image with the catchphrase "Who is Alpha?" Could this be related to the story of Amazing Spider-Man #700, which is rumored to "break the internet in half"? Stay tuned as details emerge!
  • Two new books start up in September: an 8-issue mini-series called "Road to Oz", the latest in Marvel's adaptations of Frank Baum's beloved Oz series; as well as "Nemesis 2" the latest and perhaps most anticipated in a number of recent Millarworld books.
  • Rumors of the post-AvX Marvel Universe continue to surface. In particular a writer re-shuffling is being talked about with great interest. Brian Wood has already taken over adjective-less X-Men and Ultimate X-Men as of this week, but other ideas being tossed around are Kieron Gillen and Greg Land taking over Iron Man, bumping Fraction and Larroca to Fantastic Four/FF, giving Avengers and New Avengers to Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic.
  • So where is Bendis going? Signs point to him taking over Uncanny X-Men and a new Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing, as well as Marc Waid on Avengers Assemble and Rick Remender on a new book with Jeremy Opena titled Astonishing Avengers. Whew...that's a lot to memorize.

And those are the bullet points for this week! You are now safe to start up conversations with the nerds at the comic shop without looking like a complete fool.

Until next time comics fans, stay golden.
